Valley talent shines for Artichokes basketball
Artichokes Basketball Finding Their Stride Mid-Season
If you haven't caught a Scottsdale Community College men's basketball game yet this season, you're missing out on some exciting hardwood action right in our backyard.
The Fighting Artichokes are battling through a competitive ACCAC season with a roster packed with homegrown Valley talent. Head Coach Zachary Harrison has assembled a squad featuring players from local powerhouses including Hamilton in Chandler, Desert Ridge and North Phoenix Christian in Phoenix, Mesa High, and Desert Mountain in Scottsdale.
January has been a rollercoaster ride for Artichoke faithful. The team dropped tough contests to South Mountain, Glendale, and nationally-ranked Pima but has bounced back impressively with consecutive home victories. They dominated Mesa Community College 88-68 on January 21 before throttling Phoenix College 89-69 just three days later.
The roster showcases a nice blend of youth and experience. Sophomores McCade Peterson, Tylan Holleman, and Coleman Fields provide leadership while freshmen like Davion Harris from Hamilton and Conway Cummard from Mesa push the pace.
Playing their home games on the campus situated on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land, the two-time NJCAA Region 1 champions offer Valley basketball fans an affordable alternative to watching hoops. Regular season home games are free to attend, though donations are welcomed to support the athletic department.
The upcoming schedule includes road trips to Chandler-Gilbert and South Mountain before a highly anticipated February 7 rematch against Pima at home.
For local hoops enthusiasts looking to support the next generation of Arizona basketball talent, catching the Artichokes in action is a slam dunk decision.
