Two More Measles Cases Confirmed in Phoenix
Measles Cases Climb in Phoenix Area with New Gilbert Exposure Sites
If you've been running errands in Gilbert lately, you might want to check those dates on your calendar. Maricopa County health officials confirmed two new measles cases Friday, bringing unwelcome news along with three additional exposure sites that have Valley residents on alert.
The latest potential exposures all occurred in Gilbert at popular locations many East Valley families frequent regularly. Target on Warner Road, EOS Fitness on Val Vista Drive, and Sam's Club on Gilbert Road were all named as spots where people may have come into contact with the highly contagious virus between January 13 and 15.
These cases add to an already concerning situation. Earlier this month, health officials warned about potential exposure at the Hale Center Theatre in downtown Gilbert following performances in early January.
One of the newly confirmed cases has no known source of exposure, which is particularly troubling for health officials tracking the spread.
Dr. Nick Staab, chief medical officer for Maricopa County, emphasized that declining vaccination rates have left the community more vulnerable than it has been in decades. Arizona is currently experiencing its largest measles outbreak since the early 1990s, with most cases concentrated in Mohave County near the Utah border.
The MMR vaccine remains highly effective at preventing infection. Those who may have been exposed should watch for symptoms including high fever, red watery eyes, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive red rash that typically appears seven to 21 days after exposure.
Health officials urge anyone experiencing symptoms to call their healthcare provider before visiting any medical facility to avoid potentially exposing others.
