Plan ahead as Phoenix Open takes over roads

North Scottsdale Traffic Alert: Phoenix Open Road Closures Begin Friday

If your daily commute takes you anywhere near TPC Scottsdale, it's time to update your GPS and adjust your attitude. Street closures for the WM Phoenix Open kick off this Friday, January 31, and trust us, you don't want to be caught off guard.

The City of Scottsdale has activated its alert system to warn residents about upcoming traffic headaches as the tournament transforms north Scottsdale into golf central. The closures will remain in effect through the tournament's conclusion on February 8.

Here's what you need to know. Greenway-Hayden Loop will be completely shut down between Bell Road and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. Bell Road itself will close between 82nd Street and Hayden Road. Traffic between Princess Drive and Bell Road will face heavy restrictions throughout the event.

For those heading to the tournament, forget about using the Hayden Road or Scottsdale Road exits from Loop 101 for general parking. Those are reserved for ADA access and credentialed passes only. Instead, take Loop 101 to Princess Boulevard or Bell Road, or use the free shuttle service from Salt River Fields starting Wednesday.

The closures begin ahead of the Concert in the Coliseum on Friday night, where The Killers will perform at the legendary 16th hole with special guest Tyler Hubbard. Gates open at 3 p.m.

Scottsdale police recommend planning alternate routes and building extra time into your commute. The tournament typically draws between 700,000 and 800,000 fans throughout the week, making the area around TPC Scottsdale a maze of checkpoints and detours.

For residents who've lived through Phoenix Open season before, you know the drill. For newcomers, welcome to the greatest show on grass and its annual traffic chaos.
